3. Yellow Fever
Your hatred of mosquitoes is well founded; these little annoyances can kill you. Yellow Fever, a flavivirus is transmitted to humans through infected mosquitoes. The illness can range from a strong fever to severe hepatitis and hemorrhagic fever. The disease has been around for at least 400 years and gets the “yellow” part of its name from the yellowish jaundice symptoms exhibited by some of its victims.
Today, the disease is most prevalent in South America and Africa. Over the last 400 years, millions of people have been infected by yellow fever. Many, but not all of these victims have perished. The WHO estimates that there are around 200,000 new cases a year with around 30,000 deaths resulting from the infection.
